Building Permits

Below is a list of the types of permits required in the City of Hoover.
Type of Permit Permit Fees / Bonds
Commercial Construction Permit One dollar ($1.00) to one thousand dollars ($1,000.00) is a Fifty dollar ($50.00) fee. Eight Dollars and fifty cents ($8.50) per thousand or fraction thereof over One Thousand one dollars (1,001.00). If land disturbing activity is involved, an Erosion Control Permit ($400 fee) is also required - see Bond Requirements and Information.** A fee of $1.00 per $1,000 of authorized construction cost is collected as required by the State of Alabama to be used to fund the Construction Industry Craft Training (CICT) Program
Residential Construction Permit New, single family home - $0.00 to $1,000.00 = $50.00 fee. $1,001.00 and above is $8.50 per thousand of total cost of construction & $1,500 base fee and $100 erosion fee. Other fees may apply for sewer and for zoning fees depending on the location of construction.For work on an existing home - $8.50 per $1,000 of the valuation of construction plus $41.50 Minimum fee = $50.
Mechanical Permit $8.50 per $1,000 of job cost, plus $41.50 issuance fee.

Street Cut Permit Fees: $5 (non-refundable), $200 bond (to be refunded upon approved inspection) see Bond Requirements and Information
Sign Permit $8.50 per $1,000 of cost of sign & installation, plus $41.50
issuance fee. Minimum fee = $50
Burn Permits Note: Burn Permits are issued by the city's Fire Department. Call 205-444-7655 for more information.

Driveway Permits Driveway Permits are issued by the city's Engineering Department. Generally, separate driveway permits are not issued, please contact us at 205-444-7586 for information concerning this type of permit. If a driveway accesses a state, county, or federal highway, then appropriate approvals must be obtained. In addition, if the application is for access to an U.S. highway, the Alabama Department of Transportation will be involved in the approval process.
