Communications Center

The Hoover Public Safety Communications Center answers 911 calls and dispatches Police, Fire, and Emergency Medical units to respond to emergencies.  The Public Safety Communications staff also monitors police, fire, and other emergency radios, video surveillance screens, alarms, telephones, and other communication devices.

The Hoover Public Safety Communications Center is very proud of the Class I rating received by the ISO (Insurance Services Office) in May of 1999, scoring a perfect 10 out of 10. The Class I rating allows Hoover residents and businesses to enjoy lower insurance rates.

The Communications Center has eight operator positions and is staffed by one lieutenant, one sergeant, two communications supervisors, two systems coordinators, four telecommunicator II's, and nineteen telecommunicator I's. All dispatchers go through an initial thirteen (13) week training program concentrating on receiving an emergency call, plus fire department and police department dispatching. In addition to this, all dispatchers are certified in the area of Emergency Medical Dispatching. This certification allows dispatchers to instruct the caller how to give first aid between the time the call is received and when the Hoover Fire Department arrives.

Hoover continues to prove to be a progressive city by offering updates within the city via AM radio. Tune into AM 1610 for ongoing traffic updates within the city, severe weather updates, disaster information, and details on special events.
