Effective immediately, we will have empty jugs available at all the Hoover Fire Stations, Public Safety Center, Hoover Fueling Center as well as the loading dock at the Municipal Complex. Residents may pick one up and then return their used cooking oil to the City. Then, the city employees will process this grease into fuel for about .70 cents per gallon. We can then use this fuel in our fleet of diesel vehicles and equipment.
85% of the fuel used by the City of Hoover is a qualified alternative fuel. These alternative fuels are E-85 Ethanol, B-20 Bio-Diesel and B-100 Bio-Diesel. The alternative fuel usage represents more than 600,000 gallons in the last 2 years.
These alternative fuels are made in the United States. The E-85 Ethanol is made in Georgia and the B-20 Bio-Diesel is made in Alabama. The B-100 Bio-Diesel is made in Hoover by our City Employees using waste vegetable oil collected in our G2O recycling program.
Please take one of these empty jugs, fill it with your used cooking oil and return it to the City so you can aid in the effort for a cleaner environment. By repeating this process, you can make a difference in our environment by keeping used oil out of our sewers and landfills.
The City of Hoover presently has a great recycling program as apparent by the tons of recycling picked up annually as well as the amount collected at Household Hazardous Waste day held in the City every spring.
Both of these programs are great ways for our residents to get involved in making a difference in our community and is one more way we all can make a difference in the environment that will effect generations to come.
